Is Jailbreaking Legal in the USA?

US Legal Status

Jailbreaking iPhones and iOS devices is legal in the United States under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) through a series of exemptions granted by the U.S. Copyright Office.

2010 DMCA Exemption: The Copyright Office first granted an explicit exemption permitting jailbreaking of smartphones for interoperability purposes.
2012 & 2015 Renewals: The exemption was extended to tablets and other mobile devices.
2018 Renewal: The exemption was renewed, reaffirming the legality of jailbreaking for interoperability.
October 26, 2021: The U.S. Copyright Office re-approved the exemption in the latest triennial review, keeping jailbreaking explicitly legal for another three-year cycle.

Summary of Key Findings

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) successfully argued for and obtained DMCA exemptions that clarify the following:

Jailbreaking a device you own does not violate the DMCA.
Distributing jailbreak tools for research, education, and interoperability is protected.
Apple's Terms of Service may be violated, which can void your warranty — but this is a civil contract matter, not a criminal one.

Your Privacy Matters

Data Collection

ZiGuZa collects no personal data. The jailbreak tool runs entirely in your browser — we do not collect device identifiers, IP addresses, iOS version data, or usage telemetry.

Local Storage

The app uses localStorage solely to remember your tweak preferences. This data is stored locally on your device and never transmitted anywhere.

Third-Party Services

Clicking the PayPal donation button redirects you to PayPal's own website, which is governed by PayPal's privacy policy. No data is shared with PayPal before your voluntary click.

Educational Purpose

ZiGuZa is created purely for educational, security research, and interoperability purposes. It is not intended for malicious use in any form.
